The Federal Supreme Court dealt with an appeal in a lease termination dispute. It had ordered the appellants to pay a CHF 500 advance of costs, first by decision of 11 September 2012 and then by additional deadline of 1 October 2012 under Art. 62(3) LTF. Because the advance was not paid within the prescribed time, the President declared the appeal inadmissible under Art. 108(1)(a) LTF. Judicial costs of CHF 500 were imposed jointly and severally on the appellants.
Art. 62 al. 3 LTF, Art. 108 al. 1 let. a LTF; failure to pay the advance of costs within the time limit, even after an additional deadline, renders the appeal inadmissible. Where the appellant does not comply with the advance-payment order, the court may issue a non-entry decision without examining the merits. The judicial costs are borne by the unsuccessful appellants and may be imposed jointly and severally under Art. 66 al. 1, 3 et 5 LTF.

Vu l'ordonnance du 11 septembre 2012 invitant les recourants à verser jusqu'au 26 septembre 2012 une avance de frais de 500 fr. et l'ordonnance du 1er octobre 2012 fixant en application de l'art. 62 al. 3 LTF un délai supplémentaire jusqu'au 16 octobre 2012.
Que l'avance de frais requise n'a pas été effectuée dans les délais impartis.
Que le recours est dès lors irrecevable faute d'avance de frais (art. 62 al. 3 LTF).
Que les frais judiciaires sont à mettre à la charge des recourants, solidairement entre eux (art. 66 al 1, 3 et 5 LTF).
par ces motifs, vu l'art. 108 al. 1 let. a LTF, la Présidente prononce:

Le recours est irrecevable.
2.
Les frais judiciaires, arrêtés à 500 fr., sont mis à la charge des recourants, solidairement entre eux.

Le présent arrêt est communiqué aux parties et au Tribunal cantonal du canton de Vaud, Cour d'appel civile.
