X. filed a federal criminal-law complaint for denial of justice against the Fribourg cantonal court after challenging the refusal of conditional release. Considérant:
que le 2 décembre 2011, X.________ a recouru devant le Tribunal cantonal du canton de Fribourg contre la décision du 25 novembre 2011 de la Direction de la sécurité et de la justice lui refusant la libération conditionnelle;
que le 9 mars 2012, il a interjeté au Tribunal fédéral un recours en matière pénale pour déni de justice contre la juridiction cantonale précitée;
qu'à la suite de l'arrêt rendu par celle-ci le 16 mars 2012, X.________ a retiré son recours et conclu à l'octroi de dépens, par courrier du 21 mars 2012;
qu'il sied d'en prendre acte et de rayer la cause du rôle (art. 32 al. 2 LTF), sans frais (art. 66 al. 2 LTF);
que les dépens, qui ont été causés inutilement, seront supportés par le recourant qui n'a droit à aucune indemnité (art. 68 al 4 et art. 66 al. 3 LTF);
que la demande d'assistance judiciaire se révèle sans objet;
Par ces motifs, le Juge unique prononce:

La cause est rayée du rôle.
2.
Il n'est pas prélevé de frais judiciaires.
3.
Il n'est pas alloué de dépens.
4.
La demande d'assistance judiciaire est sans objet.
5.
La présente ordonnance est communiquée aux parties et au Tribunal cantonal, Section administrative.

The Court took note of the withdrawal and struck the case from the docket.
Following the cantonal decision of 16 March 2012, the appeal was withdrawn by letter of 21 March 2012; the Court therefore entered no further merits examination.

Because the matter was struck from the docket after withdrawal, the Court ordered the proceedings to be free of court costs.

No party compensation was awarded and the legal-aid request became moot.
