Das Obergericht des Kantons Zürich trat am 4. April 2014 auf eine Beschwerde nicht ein, weil der Beschwerdeführer eine verlangte Kaution nicht bezahlt hatte. Er macht vor Bundesgericht geltend, er habe die Kaution nicht leisten können. Indessen behauptet er selber nicht, das Obergericht auf seine angeblich schlechte finanzielle Lage aufmerksam gemacht und sie nachgewiesen zu haben. Folglich ist von vornherein nicht ersichtlich, inwieweit der angefochtene Entscheid gegen das Recht im Sinne von Art. 95 BGG verstossen könnte. Auf die Beschwerde ist mangels einer Begründung, die der Vorschrift von Art. 42 Abs. 2 BGG genügt, im Verfahren nach Art. 108 BGG nicht einzutreten.
Die Gerichtskosten sind dem Beschwerdeführer aufzuerlegen (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG). Nachdem von ihm ein Kostenvorschuss verlangt wurde, machte er geltend, er habe das Geld nicht, da er nur über ein Pensionskassenguthaben verfüge (act. 6). Die Eingabe ist als Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege entgegenzunehmen. Dieses ist indessen in Anwendung von Art. 64 BGG abzuweisen, weil die Rechtsbegehren aussichtslos erschienen. Da der Beschwerdeführer es unterlassen hat, seine finanzielle Lage zu beweisen, auf welchem Mangel er ausdrücklich aufmerksam gemacht wurde (act. 7), kommt eine Herabsetzung der Gerichtskosten nicht in Betracht.
Auf die Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.
Das Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege wird abgewiesen.
Die Gerichtskosten von Fr. 800.-- werden dem Beschwerdeführer auferlegt.
Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien und dem Obergericht des Kantons Zürich, III. Strafkammer, schriftlich mitgeteilt.

The appeal was not sufficiently reasoned and could not show any violation of law.
The appellant merely asserted inability to pay the security but did not show that he had informed the cantonal court of his financial situation or substantiated it; therefore the complaint did not meet the reasoning requirements.

Free legal aid was denied because the appeal lacked prospects of success.
