R.__________ filed a federal appeal in occupational pension matters alleging a formal denial of justice by the Valais cantonal insurance court and requested legal aid. After the Federal Supreme Court refused legal aid and invited him to state whether he wished to withdraw the appeal without costs, he did so by letter. The single judge therefore struck the case from the docket, ordered no court costs, and refunded the CHF 500 advance on costs. The decision was communicated to the parties, the pension fund, and the Federal Office of Social Insurance.
Art. 32 al. 2 and Art. 66 al. 2 LTF; withdrawal of appeal and cost consequences: where the appellant withdraws the remedy, the Federal Supreme Court may strike the case from the docket by single judge. In such a situation, and absent special circumstances, no judicial costs are levied and any advance on costs is to be refunded. The discontinuance of the proceedings renders a merits decision unnecessary.

Considérant en fait et en droit:
que par acte du 9 février 2007, R.________ a interjeté un recours en matière de droit public, subsidiairement un recours constitutionnel pour déni de justice formel à raison d'un retard injustifié à statuer contre le Tribunal cantonal des assurances du canton du Valais;
qu'il a sollicité, simultanément, l'octroi de l'assistance judiciaire pour la procédure fédérale, tout en effectuant l'avance de frais requise;
que par décision du 8 mai 2007, le Tribunal fédéral a rejeté la demande d'assistance judiciaire et imparti un délai de 14 jours, à dater de la notification de la décision, pour déclarer s'il entendait retirer, sans frais, son recours;
que par lettre du 31 mai 2007, R.________ a retiré son recours;
qu'il sied de radier sans frais la cause du rôle (art. 66 al. 2 LTF),
par ces motifs, le Juge instructeur, vu l'art. 32 al. 2 LTF, décide:

La cause 9C_12/2007 est rayée du rôle ensuite de retrait du recours.
2.
Il n'est pas perçu de frais de justice.
3.
L'avance de frais effectuée par le recourant, d'un montant de 500 fr., lui est restituée.
4.
La présente décision sera communiquée aux parties, à la Caisse de retraite et de prévoyance du personnel enseignant du canton X.________ et à l'Office fédéral des assurances sociales.
