que E.________ a interjeté un recours de droit administratif contre le jugement du Tribunal des assurances du canton de Vaud du 2 mai 2000, dans la cause qui l'oppose à la Caisse cantonale vaudoise de compensation AVS;
que par ordonnance du 6 septembre 2000, notifiée le lendemain à son destinataire, le Président du Tribunal fédéral des assurances a invité le prénommé à verser, dans un délai de 14 jours à dater de la notification de cette ordonnance, une avance de frais de 500 fr. en garantie des frais de justice présumés;
que par lettre du 11 septembre 2000, le recourant a déclaré retirer son recours,
par ces motifs, le Tribunal fédéral des assurances
décide :
I. La cause H 296/00 est rayée du rôle ensuite du retrait
du recours.
II. Il n'est pas perçu de frais de justice.
III. La présente décision sera communiquée aux parties, au Tribunal des assurances du canton de Vaud et à l'Office fédéral des assurances sociales.
