Considerando:
che A.________ ha presentato appello contro la sentenza di divorzio emanata il 21 febbraio 2012 dal Pretore della giurisdizione di Mendrisio Sud;
che con decreto 9 luglio 2012 il Presidente della I Camera civile del Tribunale d'appello del Cantone Ticino ha respinto la richiesta di A.________ di esonero dal versamento dell'anticipo per spese processuali presumibili e gli ha impartito un ultimo termine scadente il 14 settembre 2012 per depositare il predetto anticipo;
che con il medesimo decreto il Presidente della I Camera civile del Tribunale d'appello ha altresì respinto la richiesta di A.________ intesa alla designazione di un patrocinatore d'ufficio;
che con ricorso in materia civile 14 settembre 2012 A.________ ha impugnato tale decreto dinanzi al Tribunale federale, chiedendone l'annullamento e la riforma nel senso che le sue richieste di esonero dal pagamento delle spese processuali e di nomina di un patrocinatore d'ufficio siano accolte;
che il ricorrente ha pure (implicitamente) postulato di essere posto al beneficio dell'assistenza giudiziaria per la sede federale;
che giusta l'art. 100 cpv. 1 LTF il ricorso contro una decisione deve essere depositato presso il Tribunale federale entro trenta giorni dalla notificazione del testo integrale della decisione e che tale termine è sospeso dal 15 luglio al 15 agosto incluso in virtù dell'art. 46 cpv. 1 lett. b LTF;
che il termine è osservato ove lo scritto sia consegnato al Tribunale federale oppure, all'indirizzo di questo, alla posta svizzera o a una rappresentanza diplomatica o consolare svizzera al più tardi l'ultimo giorno del termine (art. 48 cpv. 1 LTF);
che in concreto il decreto impugnato è stato notificato al ricorrente il 26 luglio 2012;
che, tenendo conto delle predette ferie giudiziarie estive, l'ultimo giorno utile per il deposito del ricorso era il 14 settembre 2012;
che il ricorrente ha consegnato il suo gravame alla posta italiana il 14 settembre 2012, ma la posta svizzera ha ricevuto in consegna l'invio soltanto il 20 settembre 2012;
che in queste circostanze il ricorso si appalesa tardivo e quindi inammissibile;
che giusta l'art. 108 cpv. 1 lett. a LTF il Presidente della Corte decide in procedura semplificata circa la non entrata nel merito su ricorsi manifestamente inammissibili;
che la domanda di assistenza giudiziaria deve essere respinta per mancanza di probabilità di esito favorevole del ricorso (art. 64 cpv. 1 e 3 LTF);
che le spese giudiziarie seguono la soccombenza (art. 66 cpv. 1 LTF);
per questi motivi, la Presidente pronuncia:

Il ricorso è inammissibile.
2.
La domanda di assistenza giudiziaria del ricorrente è respinta.
3.
Le spese giudiziarie di fr. 300.-- sono poste a carico del ricorrente.
4.
Comunicazione al ricorrente e al Presidente della I Camera civile del Tribunale d'appello del Cantone Ticino.
