Erwägungen:

Der Beschwerdeführer gelangte mit Rekurs gegen ein Urteil des Amtsgerichtspräsidenten von Bucheggberg-Wasseramt vom 17. August 2010 betreffend Rechtsöffnung an das Obergericht des Kantons Solothurn. Dieses trat am 22. September 2010 auf den Rekurs nicht ein. Der Beschwerdeführer gelangt mit Eingabe vom 4. Oktober 2010 (Postaufgabe) an das Bundesgericht mit dem sinngemässen Begehren, das Obergericht sei anzuhalten, auf den Rekurs einzutreten.

2.1 In der Beschwerde ist in Auseinandersetzung mit den Erwägungen des angefochtenen Entscheids darzulegen, welche Rechte der beschwerdeführenden Partei durch das kantonale Gericht verletzt worden sind (Art. 42 Abs. 2 BGG; BGE 134 II 244 E. 2.1 S. 245), wobei eine allfällige Verletzung verfassungsmässiger Rechte vom Bundesgericht nicht von Amtes wegen geprüft wird, sondern nur dann, wenn solche Rügen in der Beschwerdeschrift ausdrücklich erhoben und begründet werden (Art. 106 Abs. 2 BGG; BGE 135 III 232 E. 1.2 S. 234).

2.2 Das Obergericht hat erwogen, das erstinstanzliche Urteil vom 17. August 2010 sei dem Beschwerdeführer am 19. August 2010 per Gerichtsurkunde zugestellt worden. Der Beschwerdeführer habe seinen Rekurs am 3. September 2010 der Post übergeben, womit die zehntägige Rekursfrist abgelaufen sei. Da sich auch ein Kostenrekurs als verspätet erweise, könne auf den Rekurs nicht eingetreten werden.

2.3 Der Beschwerdeführer geht nicht auf die massgebenden obergerichtlichen Erwägungen ein und zeigt nicht anhand dieser auf, inwiefern das Obergericht rechts- bzw. verfassungswidrig entschieden hat.

Auf die offensichtlich unzulässige Beschwerde ist somit im vereinfachten Verfahren (Art. 108 Abs. 1 lit. b BGG) durch die Präsidentin der Abteilung unter Kostenfolge für den Beschwerdeführer nicht einzutreten (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG).
Demnach erkennt die Präsidentin:

Auf die Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.

2.
Die Gerichtskosten von Fr. 1'000.-- werden dem Beschwerdeführer auferlegt.

3.
Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien und dem Obergericht des Kantons Solothurn, Zivilkammer, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
