Der Präsident zieht in Erwägung:

Der in Frage stehende Entscheid des Appellationsgerichts des Kantons Basel-Stadt vom 8. Januar 2008 wurde dem seinerzeitigen Anwalt des Gesuchstellers am 11. Februar 2008 zugestellt. Die Frist zur Beschwerde ans Bundesgericht gemäss Art. 100 Abs. 1 BGG lief folglich am 12. März 2008 ab.
Mit Eingabe vom 8. August 2008 wendet sich der Gesuchsteller mit einem Fristwiederherstellungsgesuch an die Vorinstanz. Diese hat die Eingabe zuständigkeitshalber an das Bundesgericht weitergeleitet. Eine Wiederherstellung der Beschwerdefrist käme indessen nur in Betracht, sofern der Gesuchsteller unter Angabe des Grundes innert 30 Tagen nach Wegfall des Hindernisses darum ersucht und die versäumte Rechtshandlung nachgeholt hätte (Art. 50 Abs. 1 BGG). Der Gesuchsteller, der ausschliesslich die Tätigkeit seines seinerzeitigen Anwalts kritisiert, sagt indessen nicht, weshalb er das Gesuch um Wiederherstellung der Frist erst am 8. August 2008 und somit rund fünf Monate nach Ablauf der Beschwerdefrist eingereicht hat. Die Behauptung, sein Anwalt habe ihm das Urteil erst nach Ablauf der Beschwerdefrist zugestellt, genügt als Begründung für die Verzögerung von fünf Monaten nicht. Dazu kommt, dass es der Gesuchsteller unterlassen hat, die versäumte Rechtshandlung nachzuholen, d.h. die unterlassene Beschwerde einzureichen. Auf das Gesuch um Wiederherstellung der Frist zur Beschwerde ist deshalb nicht einzutreten. Da auch auf eine Beschwerde nicht eingetreten werden könnte, ergeht das Urteil im Verfahren nach Art. 108 BGG.

Auf eine Kostenauflage kann ausnahmsweise verzichtet werden.

Demnach erkennt der Präsident:

Auf das Gesuch um Wiederherstellung der Frist zur Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.

2.
Es werden keine Kosten erhoben.

3.
Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien und dem Appellationsgericht des Kantons Basel-Stadt schriftlich mitgeteilt.
