The Federal Supreme Court dealt with an appeal against an order placing the appellant in pre-trial detention. After the appeal had been forwarded to the Federal Supreme Court, the appellant withdrew it by letter. The court therefore discontinued the proceedings as withdrawn and, considering the circumstances, waived court costs. The decision was communicated to the appellant, the prosecution office, and the detention judge.
Withdrawal of an appeal; costs in proceedings rendered moot by withdrawal: if the appellant withdraws the appeal, the Federal Supreme Court strikes the case from the docket without examining the merits (consid. 1). In such circumstances, court costs may exceptionally be waived where the case constellation so warrants (consid. 2).

dass X.________ die Beschwerde mit Schreiben vom 23. September 2008 zurückgezogen hat;
dass es sich unter den gegebenen Umständen rechtfertigt, für das vorliegende Verfahren keine Kosten zu erheben;
wird verfügt:

Die Beschwerde im Verfahren 1B_257/2008 wird als durch Rückzug erledigt abgeschrieben.
2.
Es werden keine Kosten erhoben.
3.
Diese Verfügung wird dem Beschwerdeführer, der Staatsanwaltschaft Limmattal/Albis und dem Bezirksgericht Zürich, Haftrichter, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
