The Federal Supreme Court held that the complaint failed to satisfy the reasoning requirements of Art. 42(2) BGG, as no admissible ground of appeal was articulated. It therefore did not enter into the complaint in simplified procedure under Art. 108(1)(b) BGG. The request for legal aid was denied because the appeal had no prospect of success, and no court costs were imposed.

Beschwerde gegen die Verfügung vom 13. August 2010 des Appellationsgerichts des Kantons Basel-Stadt, Statthalterin.
Erwägungen:

Das Appellationsgericht Basel-Stadt wies mit Verfügung vom 13. August 2010 ein von X.________ gestelltes Gesuch um Akteneinsicht ab. Das Strafverfahren sei mit einem rechtskräftigen Urteil abgeschlossen worden und ein rechtliches Interesse, in die Akten dieses Verfahrens Einsicht zu nehmen, sei nicht erkennbar.

Gegen die Verfügung des Appellationsgerichts Basel-Stadt führt X.________ mit Eingabe vom 29. August 2010 Beschwerde beim Bundesgericht. Das Appellationsgericht beantragt Abweisung der Beschwerde, verzichtet indessen auf die Einreichung einer Stellungnahme.

Nach Art. 42 Abs. 2 BGG ist in der Begründung einer Beschwerde in gedrängter Form darzulegen, inwiefern der angefochtene Entscheid Recht verletzt. Die Bestimmungen von Art. 95 ff. BGG nennen die vor Bundesgericht zulässigen Beschwerdegründe.
Der Beschwerdeführer nennt keinen zulässigen Beschwerdegrund und legt nicht dar, inwiefern das Appellationsgericht Basel-Stadt Recht im Sinne von Art. 42 Abs. 2 BGG verletzt haben sollte, als es das Gesuch um Akteneinsicht abwies. Mangels einer genügenden Begründung im Sinne von Art. 42 Abs. 2 BGG ist auf die Beschwerde nicht einzutreten. Der Begründungsmangel ist offensichtlich, weshalb über die Beschwerde im vereinfachten Verfahren nach Art. 108 Abs. 1 lit. b BGG entschieden werden kann.

Angesichts der Aussichtslosigkeit des Verfahrens ist dem Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege nicht zu entsprechen (Art. 64 BGG). Auf eine Kostenauflage kann indessen verzichtet werden (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG).
Demnach erkennt der Präsident:

Auf die Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.

2.
Das Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege wird abgewiesen.

3.
Es werden keine Kosten erhoben.

4.
Dieses Urteil wird dem Beschwerdeführer und dem Appellationsgericht des Kantons Basel-Stadt, Statthalterin, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
