The Federal Supreme Court dealt with an attempted appeal against a cantonal judgment ordering the appellant to pay two monetary amounts and rejecting his counterclaim. The appellant only filed a notice of intent to challenge the judgment and requested appointed counsel. The Court held that the submission did not satisfy the federal pleading requirements, because it did not identify the violated rights or provide reasoned legal criticism of the cantonal decision. The appeal was therefore not entered into. Because the appeal was hopeless, the request for legal aid was denied. In view of the circumstances, no court costs were imposed.
Art. 42 Abs. 2 und Art. 106 Abs. 2 BGG; Art. 108 Abs. 1 lit. b OG; admissibility of a federal appeal and requirement of specific reasoning: a recourse must, in relation to the contested reasons, set out which rights were infringed and why; alleged violations of fundamental rights or cantonal constitutional rights are reviewed only if expressly raised and substantiated. A mere declaration of intent to appeal does not satisfy these requirements. Where the appeal is manifestly hopeless or inadmissible, legal aid and appointment of counsel must be refused (Art. 64 Abs. 1 BGG). Costs may exceptionally be waived (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG).

In Erwägung,
dass das Obergericht des Kantons Aargau mit Urteil vom 23. Oktober 2007 den Beschwerdeführer zur Zahlung von Fr. 10'000.-- nebst 5 % Zins seit 21. Dezember 2002 sowie von Fr. 11'506.20 nebst 5 % Zins seit 4. April 2003 verpflichtete und die Widerklage des Beschwerdeführers abwies;
dass der Beschwerdeführer mit Eingabe vom 20. Januar 2008 beim Bundesgericht erklärte, das Urteil des Obergerichts vom 23. Oktober 2007 mit Beschwerde anfechten zu wollen, und er das Gesuch stellte, es sei ihm ein unentgeltlicher Rechtsvertreter beizuordnen;
dass in den Rechtsmitteln an das Bundesgericht unter Bezugnahme auf die Erwägungen des angefochtenen Entscheides dargelegt werden muss, welche Rechte der beschwerdeführenden Partei durch das kantonale Gericht verletzt worden sind (Art. 42 Abs. 2 BGG), wobei eine allfällige Verletzung der bundesrechtlichen Grundrechte oder kantonaler verfassungsmässiger Rechte vom Bundesgericht nicht von Amtes wegen geprüft wird, sondern nur dann, wenn entsprechende Rügen in der Beschwerdeschrift ausdrücklich erhoben und begründet werden (Art. 106 Abs. 2 BGG);
dass die Eingabe des Beschwerdeführers vom 20. Januar 2008 diese Anforderungen offensichtlich nicht erfüllt, weshalb auf seine Beschwerde mangels hinreichender Begründung nicht einzutreten ist (Art. 108 Abs. 1 lit. b OG);
dass das Gesuch um Beiordnung eines unentgeltlichen Rechtsvertreters wegen Aussichtslosigkeit der Beschwerde abzuweisen ist (Art. 64 Abs. 1 BGG);
dass unter den gegebenen Umständen auf die Erhebung von Gerichtskosten zu verzichten ist (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG);
erkennt der Präsident:

Das Gesuch um Beiordnung eines unentgeltlichen Rechtsvertreters wird abgewiesen.
2.
Auf die Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.
3.
Es werden keine Gerichtskosten erhoben.
