la lettre du 4 septembre 2012 par laquelle le mandataire du recourant déclare retirer le recours;
considérant:
qu'il y a lieu de prendre acte du retrait du recours et de rayer la cause du rôle (art. 32 al. 2 LTF);
que le recourant supporte les frais judiciaires réduits (art. 66 al. 2 LTF);
qu'il n'est pas alloué de dépens à l'intimé;
par ces motifs, la Présidente ordonne:

La cause est rayée du rôle par suite de retrait du recours.
2.
Les frais judiciaires, arrêtés à 500 fr., sont mis à la charge du recourant.
3.
Il n'est pas alloué de dépens à l'intimé.
4.
La présente ordonnance est communiquée aux parties et à la Chambre des relations collectives de travail du canton de Genève.
