Der Einzelrichter zieht in Erwägung:

Der Beschwerdeführer wurde mit Verfügung vom 18. September 2012 aufgefordert, dem Bundesgericht spätestens am 2. Oktober 2012 einen Kostenvorschuss von Fr. 2'000.-- einzuzahlen. Er holte die Verfügung auf der Post nicht ab. Da er dafür zu sorgen hat, dass er gerichtliche Sendungen erhält, gilt die Verfügung als zugestellt. Nachdem der Kostenvorschuss innert Frist nicht einging, wurde ihm mit Verfügung vom 5. Oktober 2012 die gesetzlich vorgeschriebene Nachfrist zur Bezahlung des Kostenvorschusses bis zum 19. Oktober 2012 angesetzt, ansonsten auf das Rechtsmittel nicht eingetreten werde. Diese Verfügung nahm er am 9. Oktober 2012 in Empfang. Dennoch ging der Kostenvorschuss auch innert der Nachfrist nicht ein. Auf die Beschwerde ist androhungsgemäss im Verfahren nach Art. 108 BGG nicht einzutreten.

Die Gerichtskosten sind dem Beschwerdeführer aufzuerlegen (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG).

Demnach erkennt der Einzelrichter:

Auf die Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.

2.
Die Gerichtskosten von Fr. 800.-- werden dem Beschwerdeführer auferlegt.

3.
Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien und dem Appellationsgericht des Kantons Basel-Stadt, Appellationsgerichtspräsidentin, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
