The Federal Supreme Court declared the public-law appeal inadmissible because it did not satisfy the strict reasoning requirements of Art. 90(1)(b) OJ. The appellant merely protested his innocence and did not meaningfully challenge the cantonal court’s detailed reasoning. His reliance on absolute limitation was also unavailing because the limitation period had stopped running when the judgment was issued. A judicial fee of CHF 1,000 was imposed on him.
Art. 90 al. 1 let. b OJ; admissibility of a public-law appeal: the statement of grounds must set out the essential facts and specify, in a detailed and concrete manner, which constitutional rights or legal principles were violated and how. In complaints of arbitrariness, mere general criticism, a simple denial of guilt, or a repetition of arguments already raised below is insufficient. The appellant must show in a precise way why the contested decision is manifestly wrong or unjust; failing that, the appeal is inadmissible (consid. 1). Where the limitation period ceased to run upon issuance of the judgment, a plea of absolute prescription cannot succeed (consid. 1).

Considérant:
Que par arrêt du 17 août 2001, la Cour de cassation pénale du Tribunal cantonal du canton de Vaud a confirmé un jugement condamnant D.________ à une amende de 5'000 fr. pour violation de la législation cantonale sur la prévention des incendies;
Qu'agissant par la voie du recours de droit public, D.________ requiert le Tribunal fédéral d'annuler ce prononcé;
Que selon l'art. 90 al. 1 let. b de la loi fédérale d'organisation judiciaire, l'acte de recours doit contenir un exposé des faits essentiels et un exposé succinct des droits constitutionnels ou des principes juridiques tenus pour violés, précisant en quoi consiste la violation;
Que lorsqu'il se plaint d'arbitraire, le recourant ne peut donc pas se contenter de critiques générales ou imprécises, ni se borner à reprendre les arguments déjà développés en instance cantonale, ainsi que l'on peut le faire devant une juridiction d'appel habilitée à revoir librement la cause tant en fait qu'en droit;
Qu'il lui incombe, au contraire, de préciser de façon détaillée en quoi la juridiction ou l'autorité intimée s'est gravement trompée, et est parvenue à une décision manifestement erronée ou injuste;
Qu'une argumentation ne satisfaisant pas à cette exigence est irrecevable (ATF 125 I 492 consid. 1b p. 495, 117 Ia 10 consid. 4b p. 11/12, 110 Ia 1 consid. 2a p. 3);
Qu'en l'espèce, le prononcé attaqué est motivé de façon détaillée sur tous les moyens de défense du recourant;
Que l'argumentation présentée à l'appui du recours de droit public se résume, elle, à une simple protestation d'innocence et ne comporte aucune réfutation consistante des motifs retenus par la juridiction cantonale;
Qu'en particulier, le recourant insiste sur le moyen qu'il prétend tirer de la prescription absolue de l'action pénale, alors que celle-ci a cessé de courir avec le prononcé de l'arrêt (cf. arrêt 6S.683/2001 du 28 janvier 2002, consid. 3c-d), communiqué par envoi du dispositif le 23 août 2001;
Que dans ces conditions, le recours est irrecevable au regard de la disposition précitée;
Que son auteur doit acquitter l'émolument judiciaire.
Par ces motifs, vu l'art. 36a OJ, le Tribunal fédéral prononce:

Le recours est irrecevable.
2.
Le recourant acquittera un émolument judiciaire de 1'000 fr.
3.
Le présent arrêt est communiqué en copie au recourant, au Procureur général et au Tribunal cantonal du canton de Vaud.
