Das Bundesgericht zieht in Erwägung:

X.________ befand sich seit dem 16. August 2012 im Eintrittspavillon der Justizvollzugsanstalt Pöschwies. Am 17. September 2012 wurde er zweimal positiv auf THC getestet. Er gab zu, fünf Tage zuvor Haschisch konsumiert zu haben. Noch am selben Tag wurde er mit sieben Tagen Zelleneinschluss, leichtem Gruppenausschluss sowie TV-, Computer- und Spielkonsolenausschluss bestraft. Dagegen erhobene Rechtsmittel wiesen die Direktion der Justiz und des Innern des Kantons Zürich am 30. Oktober 2012 und das Verwaltungsgericht des Kantons Zürich am 17. Januar 2013 ab.

X.________ beantragt mit Beschwerde ans Bundesgericht, die Disziplinarmassnahme sei aufzuheben.

Es trifft zu, dass im Gegensatz zu anderen verbotenen Stoffen, die im menschlichen Körper nur kurze Zeit nachgewiesen werden können, der Nachweis von THC mehrere Tage lang möglich ist. Der Beschwerdeführer erachtet die daraus resultierende faktische Ungleichbehandlung der Konsumenten verschiedener verbotener Substanzen als verfassungswidrig. Diesen Einwand hat die Vorinstanz mit zutreffender Begründung widerlegt, auf die verwiesen werden kann (vgl. Urteil S. 5 E. 3.2). Der Umstand, dass nicht alle Strafgefangenen, die Betäubungsmittel konsumiert haben, diszipliniert werden können, schliesst unter dem Gesichtswinkel des Gleichbehandlungsgebots eine Disziplinierung jener Gefangenen, denen der Konsum nachgewiesen werden kann, nicht aus. Die Beschwerde ist im Verfahren nach Art. 109 BGG abzuweisen.

Die Gerichtskosten sind dem Beschwerdeführer aufzuerlegen (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG). Das Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege ist in Anwendung von Art. 64 BGG abzuweisen, weil die Rechtsbegehren aussichtslos erschienen. Der finanziellen Lage des Beschwerdeführers ist bei der Bemessung der Gerichtskosten Rechnung zu tragen (Art. 65 Abs. 2 BGG).

Demnach erkennt das Bundesgericht:

Die Beschwerde wird abgewiesen.

Das Gesuch um unentgeltliche Rechtspflege wird abgewiesen.

3.
Die Gerichtskosten von Fr. 500.-- werden dem Beschwerdeführer auferlegt.

4.
Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien und dem Verwaltungsgericht des Kantons Zürich, 3. Abteilung, Einzelrichter, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
