A criminal appellant challenged a cantonal appellate judgment before the Federal Supreme Court, but the appeal was posted one day after the deadline. Art. 100 al. 1, 46 al. 1 let. a and 108 al. 1 let. a LTF; late filing of a federal appeal: the appeal period is computed from notification of the full judgment and is extended by the statutory judicial recesses. An appeal posted after the expiry of the deadline is manifestly inadmissible and may be rejected in summary procedure. Where the appeal lacks any chance of success, legal aid is to be refused under Art. 64 al. 1 LTF; the unsuccessful appellant bears the judicial costs under Art. 66 al. 1 LTF.

Irrecevabilité formelle du recours en matière pénale, recours tardif,
recours contre le jugement de la Cour d'appel pénale du Tribunal cantonal du canton de Vaud du 23 janvier 2014.
Aux termes de l'art. 100 al. 1 LTF, le recours contre une décision doit être déposé devant le Tribunal fédéral dans les trente jours qui suivent la notification de l'expédition complète. En l'espèce, le recourant a reçu notification de l'arrêt attaqué le vendredi 4 avril 2014 (recours p. 2). Compte tenu des féries pascales (art. 46 al. 1 let. a LTF), il disposait d'un délai pour recourir échéant le lundi 19 mai 2014. Posté le mardi 20 mai 2014, son recours est tardif et irrecevable. Il peut être écarté en application de l'art. 108 al. 1 let. a LTF.
Comme les conclusions du recours étaient dépourvues de chances de succès, l'assistance judiciaire ne peut être accordée (art. 64 al. 1 LTF). Le recourant supportera les frais judiciaires (art. 66 al. 1 LTF).
Le recours est irrecevable.
La demande d'assistance judiciaire est refusée.
Les frais judiciaires, arrêtés à 500 francs, sont mis à la charge du recourant.
Le présent arrêt est communiqué aux parties et à la Cour d'appel pénale du Tribunal cantonal du canton de Vaud.
