The complainant challenged a cantonal criminal judgment by way of constitutional complaint. The Federal Court held that the older procedural law applied because the cantonal decision predated the entry into force of the BGG. It further held that the complaint was filed well after the 30-day deadline under the OG, and that a later cassation-court decision did not revive or extend that deadline. The court therefore did not enter into the complaint and imposed court costs of CHF 1,000 on the complainant.

Where the challenged decision predates the entry into force of the BGG, the former procedural law remains applicable. The 30-day filing period runs from service of the cantonal decision as determined by cantonal law. A later decision of a cassation authority does not extend or reopen the time limit for a constitutional complaint directed against the original judgment. An out-of-time complaint is inadmissible and the federal court may deny entry; the unsuccessful complainant bears the costs (Art. 156 Abs. 1 OG).

Das Bundesgericht zieht in Erwägung:

Der angefochtene Entscheid ist vor dem Inkrafttreten des Bundesgesetzes vom 17. Juni 2005 über das Bundesgericht (BGG) am 1. Januar 2007 ergangen. Auf das Rechtsmittel ist daher noch das frühere Verfahrensrecht anwendbar (Art. 132 Abs. 1 BGG, e contrario), hier somit dasjenige der staatsrechtlichen Beschwerde nach Art. 84 ff. OG.

Die staatsrechtliche Beschwerde ist binnen 30 Tagen, von der nach dem kantonalen Recht massgebenden Eröffnung des angefochtenen Entscheids an gerechnet, dem Bundesgericht schriftlich einzureichen (Art. 89 Abs. 1 OG). Diese Frist ist im vorliegenden Fall längst verstrichen. Dass später auch noch ein Entscheid des Kassationsgerichts erging (Beschwerde S. 4 Ziff. 6), ist unerheblich. Auf die staatsrechtliche Beschwerde gegen das Urteil des Obergerichts ist nicht einzutreten.

Bei diesem Ausgang des Verfahrens hat der Beschwerdeführer die bundesgerichtlichen Kosten zu tragen (Art. 156 Abs. 1 OG).
Demnach erkennt das Bundesgericht im Verfahren nach Art. 36a OG:

Auf die staatsrechtliche Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.
2.
Die Gerichtsgebühr von Fr. 1'000.-- wird dem Beschwerdeführer auferlegt.
3.
Dieses Urteil wird dem Beschwerdeführer, der Oberstaatsanwaltschaft des Kantons Zürich und dem Obergericht des Kantons Zürich, I. Strafkammer, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
