The appellant challenged a cantonal decision ordering him to vacate a bar and restaurant. In Erwägung,
dass dem Beschwerdeführer auf Gesuch der Beschwerdegegnerin vom Präsidenten der 2. Abteilung des Kreisgerichts Gaster-See mit Entscheid vom 26. August 2008 befohlen wurde, die Bar und das Restaurant in der Liegenschaft X.________ sofort nach Eintritt der Rechtskraft des Entscheides vollständig zu räumen und der Gesuchstellerin ordnungsgemäss zu übergeben;
dass der vom Beschwerdeführer gegen diesen Entscheid erhobene Rekurs vom Einzelrichter für Rekurse im Obligationenrecht des Kantonsgerichts St. Gallen mit Entscheid vom 29. September 2008 abgewiesen wurde, soweit darauf eingetreten werden konnte;
dass der Beschwerdeführer dem Bundesgericht eine vom 20. Oktober 2008 datierte Eingabe einreichte, in der er erklärte, den Entscheid des Kantonsgerichts vom 29. September 2008 mit Beschwerde in Zivilsachen und subsidiärer Verfassungsbeschwerde anzufechten;
dass die Beschwerde in Zivilsachen nach Art. 72 ff. BGG angesichts des massgebenden Streitwertes von Fr. 5'400.-- (vgl. Rechtsmittelbelehrung des angefochtenen Entscheides) nicht erhoben werden kann (Art. 74 Abs. 1 lit. a BGG), und nicht ersichtlich ist, dass diese Beschwerde dennoch zulässig ist, weil sich eine Rechtsfrage von grundsätzlicher Bedeutung im Sinne von Art. 74 Abs. 2 lit. a BGG stellen würde;
dass die Eingabe des Beschwerdeführers unter diesen Umständen als subsidiäre Verfassungsbeschwerde im Sinne der Art. 113 ff. BGG zu behandeln ist;
dass mit einer solchen Beschwerde ausschliesslich die Verletzung von verfassungsmässigen Rechten gerügt werden kann (Art. 116 BGG);
dass in der Beschwerdeschrift dargelegt werden muss, welche verfassungsmässigen Rechte durch das kantonale Gericht verletzt worden sind, und solche Rügen unter Bezugnahme auf die Erwägungen des angefochtenen Entscheides zu begründen sind (Art. 42 Abs. 2 und Art. 106 Abs. 2 in Verbindung mit Art. 117 BGG);
dass die Eingabe des Beschwerdeführers vom 20. Oktober 2008 diese Anforderungen offensichtlich nicht erfüllt, weshalb darauf mangels hinreichender Begründung nicht einzutreten ist (Art. 108 Abs. 1 lit. b in Verbindung mit Art. 117 BGG);
dass die Gerichtskosten dem Beschwerdeführer aufzuerlegen sind (Art. 66 Abs. 1 BGG);
dass keine Parteientschädigung zuzusprechen ist, weil der Beschwerdegegnerin aus diesem Verfahren kein Aufwand erwachsen ist;
erkennt der Präsident:

Auf die Beschwerde wird nicht eingetreten.
2.
Die Gerichtskosten von Fr. 500.-- werden dem Beschwerdeführer auferlegt.
3.
Es wird keine Parteientschädigung zugesprochen.

Dieses Urteil wird den Parteien und dem Kantonsgericht St. Gallen, Einzelrichter für Rekurse im Obligationenrecht, schriftlich mitgeteilt.
