A reform appeal in a divorce-modification case was filed by A.X., B.X. and C.X. against D.X. Before the Federal Supreme Court could examine it, a connected public-law appeal had already been upheld and the cantonal judgment annulled. The court therefore held that the reform appeal had lost its object and struck it from the docket. It nevertheless granted the appellants legal aid, appointing their lawyer as ex officio counsel after a summary assessment showed the appeal was not manifestly hopeless. The court also imposed a CHF 500 fee, payable provisionally by the federal court fund, and ordered CHF 1,500 for appointed counsel.
Art. 72 ff. OG; mootness of a reform appeal after annulment of the challenged judgment in a related proceeding; where a connected remedy has already led to the annulment of the impugned cantonal decision, the reform appeal loses its object and is struck from the docket. Legal aid is granted if, upon summary review, the appeal is not manifestly devoid of prospects of success; appointed counsel is designated ex officio. Procedural fees may be imposed notwithstanding legal aid, but are borne provisionally by the federal court fund, while counsel is compensated separately for ex officio representation (consid. 1-3).

le recours en réforme interjeté par A.X.________, B.X.________ et C.X.________ contre l'arrêt rendu le 17 décembre 2004 par la Chambre civile de la Cour de justice du canton de Genève dans la cause qui divise les recourants d'avec D.X.________;
la requête d'assistance judiciaire contenue dans l'acte de recours;
considérant:
que, par arrêt de ce jour, la IIe Cour civile du Tribunal fédéral a admis dans la mesure de sa recevabilité le recours de droit public connexe des recourants et annulé l'arrêt attaqué (5P.39/2005);
que, partant, le présent recours n'a plus d'objet;
que, sur le vu d'un examen sommaire, les conclusions des recourants n'apparaissaient pas dénuées de chances de succès, en sorte qu'il y a lieu d'admettre leur requête d'assistance judiciaire;
Par ces motifs, le Tribunal fédéral prononce:

Le recours est sans objet et la cause est rayée du rôle.
2.
La demande d'assistance judiciaire des recourants est admise et Me Hervé Crausaz, avocat à Genève, leur est désigné comme avocat d'office.
3.
Un émolument judiciaire de 500 fr. est mis à la charge des recourants, mais il est supporté provisoirement par la Caisse du Tribunal fédéral.
4.
La Caisse du Tribunal fédéral versera au conseil des recourants une indemnité de 1'500 fr. à titre d'honoraires d'avocat d'office.
5.
La présente décision est communiquée en copie aux mandataires des parties et à la Chambre civile de la Cour de justice du canton de Genève.

Whether the reform appeal still had a subject matter after the related appeal had annulled the challenged judgment
The appeal had become without object and had to be removed from the docket.
Because the Federal Supreme Court had already admitted the connected public-law appeal and annulled the impugned judgment, nothing remained for the reform appeal to decide.
Whether the appellants' request for legal aid should be granted
Legal aid was granted and counsel was appointed ex officio.
On a summary review, the appeal did not appear devoid of prospects of success.
Allocation of the federal court fee and compensation for ex officio counsel
A court fee of CHF 500 was imposed on the appellants but borne provisionally by the Federal Supreme Court fund, and CHF 1,500 was paid to appointed counsel as fees.
